U.S. citizens are heading to Australia in small but growing numbers as
near-10% unemployment at home drives more to look for jobs Down Under, where
China's thirst for iron ore and energy is transforming the Pacific nation
into an economic powerhouse.
美國接近10%的失業率正推動更多的美國人前往澳大利亞尋找工作,因此前往澳洲的美國
人雖然現在數量還不多,但卻在不斷增長。得益於中國對鐵礦石和能源的渴求,澳大利亞
經濟正在強勁增長。
Daniel Davila, a 23-year-old timber floorer from Camarillo, Calif.—a Los
Angeles suburb knee-deep in the Golden State's housing dust bowl—made the
14-hour move across the Pacific two years ago. He had been forced to take a
job stocking shelves at a local grocery store for $8.90 an hour when he
couldn't get work installing floors.
23歲的Daniel Davila是來自加州Camarillo的一名木地板鋪設工,這座洛杉磯郊區的小鎮
深受加州住房市場蕭條之苦,他兩年前坐了14小時飛機跨越太平洋來到澳大利亞。在美國
時由於得不到鋪設木地板的工作,他曾被迫在當地一家雜貨店幹給貨架上貨的工作,每小
時工資只有8.90美元。
On a good day in Australia, he now makes as much as 50 Australian dollars
(US$50.21) an hour—about twice the going rate for a typical flooring job in
the U.S. He plans to start his own flooring business.
而目前在澳大利亞,如果趕上生意好,他每小時最多能掙50澳元(合50.21美元),這大約
是美國鋪地板工作通常每小時工資的兩倍。戴維拉計劃創立自己的木地板鋪設企業。
"I can make what I did in a week in the U.S. in less than a day here," said
Mr. Davila, who lives near the mining boom town of Perth, in Western
Australia.
