英文文法-形容詞&一致性請益2013/1/24 - 考試

a number of也是加可數複數名詞，但數量多寡可以另外加形容詞說明
例如 a large number of 表示很多/a small number of 表示少數

: (C) cause
: (D) is causing
: 答案:(C),蚊子是第三人稱,動詞用單數,為何不選(B)?

我覺得這題應該不適合用板友說的關係子句來解，也不是假主詞用法，
應該是分裂強調句。

It is mosquitoes.
Mosquitose cause malaria.
這兩句以關代來合併的確就是題目給的句子，
但It is mosquitoes.這句本身就很奇怪，
為何不說They are mosquitoes.

分裂強調句，即it is(或其他時態單數be動詞)+...(強調部分)+that+...(原句剩下部分)
可以用來強調除了動詞、助動詞和部分修飾的副詞以外的很多部分
舉例而言，I played baseball at that park yesterday.
可以分別強調的部分有：

1.It was I that played baseball at that park yesterday.
昨天在那公園打棒球的人「是我」。強調部分剛好是人的話，that可以換成who

2.It was baseball that I played at that park yesterday.
我昨天在那公園玩的是「棒球」。

3.It was in that park that I played baseball yesterday.
我昨天打棒球的地方是「那公園」。

4.It was yesterday that I played baseball at that park.
我在那公園打棒球的時間是「昨天」。

所以回到題目而言
原句是 Mosquitoes cause malaria. (蚊子造成瘧疾)
強調蚊子就變成:
It is mosquitoes that cause malaria. (造成瘧疾的是「蚊子」)
因此才會有現在式單數的is出現。
