That sounds like a reasonable estimate. I didn't know the education degree matters. I thought it only triggered qualification. My original understanding was everything depends on your nationality, preference level (Job type), and the amount of people in your preference level queue.

And that sounds depressing :( I was hoping a 1 to 2 years processing time.

The time needed depends on what exact education qualification you have.
1. If you have a Master's Degree or above (EB-2), your wait time will be about 2 years;
2. If you have a Bachelor's Degree or below (EB-3), your wait time will be about 5 years.
Here are a brief flow of process:
DOL (PERM) > USCIS (I-140) > (Wait time if no visa quota) > Visa application > Interview > Visa issuance.

If you have a Master's Degree or above (which it does not sound like you have), your application will be easier to process and faster. If not, it will be more difficult and slower. The difference is almost everyone can qualify for EB-3 somehow (EB-3 does not really care about education).

For employment-based immigration, the U.S. concerns about local labor replacement. In fact, EB-3 visa abuse is well-known, but not EB-2.
That's what makes the difference.
Also - due to the lengthy process of EB-3, many employers will opt for H-1B first.
